What a matcha latte costs to make, per cup
Before you price a single drink, you need one number: what a cup costs you. Here is a worked example with every figure labelled, so you can swap in your own and redo the sum in two minutes.
The worked recipe
A 12 oz iced matcha latte on oat milk: 2 g of matcha whisked with water, 200 ml of oat milk over ice, in a takeaway cup with a lid. This is the drink most pop-up menus lead with.
| Ingredient | Serving | Cost per cup |
|---|---|---|
| Ceremonial-grade matchaestimate: 30 g tin at $16-25 from specialist shops | 2 g | $1.10-1.70 |
| Culinary-grade matchaestimate: 100 g pouch at $12-20 | 2 g | $0.24-0.40 |
| Oat milkestimate: 1 L carton at $3.50-5.00, supermarket | 200 ml | $0.70-1.00 |
| Cup, lid and sleeveestimate: wholesale restaurant suppliers, per case | 1 set | $0.30-0.60 |
| Syrup or sweetenerestimate | 10 ml | $0.05-0.15 |
One 12 oz iced oat matcha latte, ingredients only
about $1.30-3.20 per cup
The low end uses culinary-grade matcha, the high end ceremonial. Every figure above is an estimate from public retail prices, not a quote.
What moves the number
- Matcha grade does most of the work. It is the difference between a $0.24 scoop and a $1.70 one.
- Milk is the second cost. Barista-edition oat milk pours better but costs roughly a dollar more per carton than own-brand.
- Waste is real. Over-scooping, spilled milk and unsold ice all add a few cents a cup in practice.
- City changes retail prices. The same tin can cost 20 percent more or less depending on where you shop.
What that means for a stall price
Iced matcha lattes in larger English-speaking cities commonly sell for $5-7 in cafes (estimate, from public cafe menus, 2026). Even the most expensive version of the drink above leaves most of that as ingredient margin.
But cup cost is not profit. Stall fees, equipment, ice, cards fees and unsold stock all come out first. That is why a full start-up budget matters more than a single good margin.
Common questions
How much matcha goes in one cup?
Most recipes use 1.5 to 2 g of matcha for a 12 oz latte. That is roughly one heaped teaspoon. Weigh it for a week and your cup cost stops being a guess.
Is ceremonial-grade matcha worth it at a stall?
For lattes, usually not. Ceremonial grade is picked for drinking straight with water. A good culinary or latte-grade matcha tastes right under milk and cuts your cost per cup by about a dollar.
What margin should a first-time seller aim for?
We are researchers, not stall owners, so take this as an estimate, not lived advice: a 70 to 80 percent ingredient margin is the common rule of thumb for drinks stalls, before stall fees and equipment.
